Generating traffic is one of the top reasons that you want to establish a blog for your small business. And not just any traffic, you want to generate targeted traffic. We’ve talked about some of the SEO techniques for your business blog that you want to follow, but at the foundation of your small business blog is content. Lot’s of fresh content on a regular and consistent basis.

For many of us, coming up with a continuous supply of ideas and subjects to write about is a challenge. In fact, many small businesses with the best of intentions, flame out after the first few blog posts on their new business blog. Admittedly, it can be hard to create the new blog posts week after week. Nonetheless, it’s essential to build an ever growing supply of new content on your blog to achieve the successful results you’re after.

To help you kick start your blog content, here are 20 blog post ideas that will work for your business blog in almost any industry.

  1. Discuss the future of your industry. Talk about current developments and trends.
  2. Talk about prominent people in your industry. Every industry has so called “industry celebrities” that have some recognition. Often, these people are successful entrepreneurs in your space that have launched and operated successful businesses in your market.
  3. Review a publication that deals with your industry. Talk about how you leverage ideas that you find in this publication.
  4. Create controversy, disagree with a business personality in your industry, or a well-known or accepted business practice.
  5. Feature a list of the top 10 blogs and/or websites in your industry that you like to visit and how these online resources provide ideas that help you in your business.
  6. If you attend trade shows or industry seminars, write a review and report on these events.
  7. Compare and contrast different areas of your market, such as regional variances in your market, domestic vs. international differences, etc.
  8. Find an interesting and relevant blog post from a blog in your industry, reference that post and expand on the idea in a blog post of your own. Making these types of connections from your blog only help you expand your reach and visibility.
  9. Is there an opportunity to improve the standards and practices in your industry? Write about a “code of ethics” that can also help differentiate your business.
  10. Think off-topic and try and relate an every-day subject or idea to your business. For example, similarities in “motivating employees” to “raising kids”. Sports analogies are common, “strategies on the football field that will help you win at business”.
  11. A blog is a great way to generate discussion and feedback in your industry. Reach out to your readership and ask for ideas, feedback, and advice. For example, “what are the 3 things you would like to change in our industry”, or “what is the biggest challenge you encounter with the businesses in our industry”, etc.
  12. Feature a product that you sell or plan to offer. Include images, a description, benefits, and tips about the product. This can work for services as well.
  13. Talk about a mistake you made in your business, how you learned from the situation, and how you improved your business as a result of fixing the problem.
  14. Talk about technology advances that apply in your business. It’s always interesting to contrast the old way of doing business vs. the new way. How does technology help improve your business, create better efficiencies, improve customer service, etc.
  15. Acknowledge and recognize your best readers and/or commenters. People always appreciate a little acknowledgment.
  16. Talk about the local advantages of your business or company. As a local provider, how are you able to deliver better results for your customers than a big chain or business outside of your community.
  17. Review a book that deals with your industry or market.
  18. Review or comment on a news item in your industry or market. The closer to the news release that you can reference the news item, the more topical you can be.
  19. Talk about a trade organization that you have joined. How does it help you in your business, how does it apply to your industry. Trade organizations usually provide frequent publications that discuss many of the pertinent and meaningful subjects in your trade, a great source of ideas to write about. If you don’t belong to a trade organization, think about joining one.
  20. Make a charitable donation on behalf of your business. Then write a blog post about it. Supporting a good cause is good for your business and you should write about it.

Many of these ideas will provide an ongoing opportunity to create new content. For example, talking about prominent people in your industry, there usually is more than one. Create an ongoing series that highlights a single individual in each separate post. Or with industry trends, discuss one trend per blog post. And create follow-up posts that talk about progress or direction of the trend every 6 months.

Hopefully, these give you some ideas for creating new blog posts and content for your small business blog. Always think about the value of the information you’re providing. And ask yourself, as a customer or consumer in this market, would I be interested in this information?

OK, no excuse, now go create a new blog post. And keep them coming!
